Early risers mingle with night owls amid the choreographed comings
of lorries loades with fish. Although the area of the river port
has been filled for decades, and the fish markets have all been
bulldozed, most of the locals are still engaged in the seafood trade.
This area is particulary pleasant on fine days, when the pavements
are covered with tables and chairs and musicians give impromptu
concerts.
La Bellone
Step through the porch and you’ll discover a little gem in
the Baroque style. This splendid patrician house dates from 1697
and is dedicated to Bellona, the Roman goddess of war. In 1980
the building became a venue for performances and is also a place
for meetings and discussions. It has a reference library, and sometimes
performances are staged in the courtyard.
Opening hours: tue-fri 10am-7pm, closed in july.
Entry is free.
Hospice Pacheco
The gardens of the Beguinage behind the church have given way to
a fine group of neo-Classical buildrings by Henri Partoes. The
hospice is still open and is laid out around two courtyards lined
with arcades. Entrance is by request and you can visit the first
courtyard and the circular chapel with its coffered dome.
La Belle Maraichere
Easily the best value for money in the area. For 40 years Freddy
Devreker has been delighting his customers’ tastebuds with
dishes that skillfully combine fish and shellfish. Terrine of
ray and crab, scallops with Noilly Prat, surperb fish soup and
grilled turbot with hop shoots when they are in season. The deserts
are just as delicious and you’ll be given a very warm welcome.
Opening hours: fri-Tue noon – 2.30pm and 6-10pm
