This is an elegant buisness district, with a great number of Art
Nouveau houses. This anti-rational, exuberant style, thought shocking
when the houses were built, was adopted by the new bourgeois industrialists,
who commissioned the best architects to build their private residences.
Today theis sensual facadess conceal offices and a few good resturants;
but if you really want to plunge into the world of the visionary
Art Nouveau architect Horta, make sure you go on a tour of his
private house. The area is at its livelist on Wednesday afternoons,
due to the markrt held on Place du Chatelain.
Musee Horta
Victor Horta’s private house and the studio next door are
a catelogue of the skills of a man for whom simply being a brilliant
architect was’nt enough. In addition to the spectacular staircase,
lit by a golden brown skylight, this is the only house to have
retained its original interior décor furniture.
