Out and About in Brussels

Its important to know realise that if you want to get a good idea of what Brussels is like beyond the area of its central pentagon, you’ll neeed at least two days. You can easily walk round the centre, as the main points of interest are fairly close to eachother. But if you want to follow the ‘Art Nouveau’ or ‘Cinquantenaire’ initeraries, buy an STIB card at the metro station as soon as you arrive.

You can use this on any form of public transport. If you’ve come to Brussels by car, don’t waste you’re time trying to drive around the centre- there are hardly any parking spaces and police are particular quick to send your car off to the pound. It’s far more practical to use it in the evening and on Sundays, when public transport services are less frequent.

Public transport in Brussels runs from 5am to midnight. The city centre is well served by the underground railway known as the metro and by trams that run in tunnels. If you expect to use public transport more frequently then it is advisable to buy a day pass (BF130).

Taxis offer a handy way to get to your hotel from the airport or station, although taxis here are a little on the expensive side. On the other hand there is no increase in price at night and there is no extra charge for luggage.
