Coudenberg, located halfway between the upper and lower cities,
has been a residence of princes since the 111th century. You may
not be able to shop here, but you can fill up on culture in one
of its four museums. Catch a glimse of the King or celebrities
visiting the palace, or go for a jog round the park or listen to
a concert at the Palais des Beaux-Arts. Best of all you’ll
get a superb view over Grand-Place from the top of the Mont des
Arts.
Place Royale
This elegant neo-Classical square, with its statue of Godefroy
de Bouillon, is the work of Charles de Lorraine. Enter the arcade
to the left of the museumof Modern Art to explore the fine Louis
XVI style palace whose wings close off the view of the museum
square.
Parc Royale
These lovely grounds, laid out in the French style, were designed
by B.Guimard in 1775. As you walk along the tree-lined avenues
you’ll come upon a great many sculptures with mythological
subjects, artidical lakes and delightful pavillions where concerts
are stages in summer.
Palais des Beaux-Arts
This centre of cultural life houses a vast concert hall with amazing
acoustics, a theatre and exhibition spaces. It was also one of
Horta’s last designs. He was still setting the trend in
1922 with his pure lines heralding Atr Deco and his extensive
use of concrete. Each year the prestigious Queen Elisabeth competition
is held here.
